Canada’s for-profit model of long-term care has failed the elderly, says leading expert

The tragedy of avoidable deaths in many of Canada’s long-term care homes has resulted from a generation of neglect and funding models that extract profits at the expense of proper care. Leading experts have been pointing out the deficiencies of our current warehousing models of care for many years. Its long past time to act as this CBC story illustrates. – David Thornley

By now, homes for seniors across the country have become ground zero for the virus. They account for more than half of all COVID-related deaths in the country. That’s hundreds of this country’s elderly citizens — all with rich lives, histories and hopes for their futures — dying alone, bereft of dignity and respect. Thousands more are at risk of soon suffering the same fate. […]”
