SocialCommons.ca is a website developed by the Marvyn Novick Legacy Group that also delivers newsletters and other content via email and makes similar content available to mobile users. We also operate Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter pages.

Our Privacy Policy applies when you use any of these services. It describes the kinds of information we may gather, how we use your information, and how you can manage your information. By using our services, you are accepting the practices described in this policy, including use of cookies and similar online tools.

This policy does not apply to websites maintained by other companies or organizations to which we may link or who may link to us. We are not responsible for the actions and privacy policies of third party websites.

What kind of information do we gather about you?

The information we gather falls into two categories: 1) Personal information you voluntarily supply when you subscribe, complete a survey, or provide your email address, and 2) Non-personal aggregated information collected as you navigate and make use of our site.

If you choose to provide personal information, how will it be used and protected?

SocialCommons.ca may collect personal information from readers in connection with user engagement and feedback, e-mail subscriptions, registration for events and voluntary surveys. Data may be collected on our website or via email. Readers are primarily contacted via email, with links to online surveys.  All survey data is reported and/or used in aggregate form only, and no personally identifiable information is ever released.

SocialCommons.ca has taken steps to keep all information received from our online visitors as secure as possible against unauthorized access and use. All personal information you provide us with is kept in a secure database and protected by Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology. 

How is non-personal aggregate Information collected from website visitors?

As is standard practice employed by many websites, we use “cookies” and other technologies to help us understand which areas of our website are the most useful, what pages our visitors are going to and how much time they spend there. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks.

Socialcommons.ca does not extract any personal information in this process, nor do we provide such information to third parties. Cookies allow us to improve the navigation process and to make the website experience more relevant and helpful; they also help us measure the traffic on our website so that we can assess the effectiveness of our education and outreach efforts.

What we do with the information we gather about you?

If you provide us with personal information in order to sign up for our newsletter, a free report, to register for an event, or become a supporter, we will only use that information as follows:

Statistical Analysis:  SocialCommons.ca may perform statistical, demographic and reader engagement analyses of subscribers, and their subscribing patterns, to improve customer service.

Email Newsletters:  If you choose to receive them, SocialCommons.ca will periodically send you email newsletters.  In doing so, we will fully comply with the federal CASL Act of 2014.  We will never share, sell, rent, swap or authorize any third party to use your email address.  If you feel you have received an email from us in error, please contact info@socialcommons.ca.  

Email and Event Promotions: If you provide your email address as a subscriber, we reserve the right to send you promotional emails about events, publications or services offered through SocialCommons.ca. You may opt out of these emails at any time.

Survey Email: We may send you an email inviting you to participate in one or more user surveys. User surveys greatly help us to improve our Web site and service offerings.  Any information you provide in such surveys will never be shared with third parties.

Emails From You: If you send us email, you should be aware that information disclosed in email may not be secure or encrypted and thus may be available to others. We suggest that you exercise caution when deciding to disclose any personal or confidential information via email.  We will use your email address to respond directly to your questions or comments.

With whom do we share the information we gather?

SocialCommons.ca will never sell, rent, swap or authorize any third party to use your email address without your permission.

Service Providers: We contract with other companies to provide services on our behalf, including web hosting, website analytics, and data security.  We provide these companies only with the information they need to perform their services. These service providers are restricted from using this data in any way other than to provide services for SocialCommons.ca and they may not share or sell this data.

How do I opt out from receiving newsletters and promotional offers?

Email Newsletters:  If at any time, you no longer wish to receive our newsletter, click the “unsubscribe” link located near the bottom of each digital newsletter.
