- The Social Commons

Background

In November 2019, a policy symposium was held in Toronto to explore the potential of the Social Commons to offer transformational thinking for social solidarity in the 21^st century. The events were organized to honour the memory of Marvyn Novick, a leading thinker and contributor to the social policy field in Ontario and Canada who passed away in June 2016.

Dr. Francine Mestrum, international researcher and activist on social development, served as guest speaker in the two events to spark discussion on the relevance of a Social Commons framework in a number of policy areas, which were discussed with expert panellists by the more than 100 participants in attendance from a variety of disciplines and policy fields.

SocialCommons.ca seeks to build engaging conversations and support transformative change. All stories will be framed by our five pillars that provide the foundation for all our work. Together with our partners, we are committed to creating a future society based on stronger human rights and social protections, revitalized communities, and a more democratic and caring economy. We seek to generate an enlarged social commons with shared community assets, and where local economies are embedded within a sustainable eco-sphere on which all life on the planet depends.
